Tsalka, where the potato is worth gold

Tsalka region is one of the most improbable of Georgia. At just 70km from Tbilisi, on the volcanic highlands of the Lesser Caucasus, Tsalka is nonetheless one of the most isolated countries.

In Soviet times, was one of the most prosperous agricultural regions of the USSR. His potatoes were among the most famous of the Union. But with the disintegration of Georgian territory in the early 1990s, years of absence from the state of rule by warlords and mafia, the region found itself completely isolated.

On the high plateau between 1500 and 2700 meters of altitude, the region saw its roads quickly become peat. Moreover, it is one of the country that has experienced the greatest demographic changes. The region was inhabited before the collapse of the country, a majority of Greeks and a minority Armenians.

impoverished and tempted by the open borders of Greece to all members of its diaspora, the Greeks are almost all gone, leaving town and abandoned villages. Armenians have found themselves in the majority. Finally, late 1990s until 2005, Georgians victims of environmental disasters have been relocated here.

Mystery of potatoes

One Sunday in February, market day in Tsalka, late afternoon. We leave Tbilisi and continue our road in a BMW registered Tbilisi, to the remote mountain town. The course Tbilissiens have one thing in mind: buy potatoes half the price in the capital. After all, we're in heaven this starchy, where he is the best in the entire region and perhaps beyond.

As and when we ask indigenous, doubt takes hold of us. Whether it's some way, often women apparently Greek or Armenian as they do not include Georgian, gas station attendants or keeper of the only shop in the main street, or Adjars Svanes, yet few people crossed on the road, obviously farmers themselves probably potato growers, the reaction is the same.

"Where can I buy potatoes?" leads to a hasty reply, reluctant and unnatural: "No, no" or "Do not know" or simply a sign of the hand indicating the non-categorical, which contrasts with the sympathy of the first.

In the land of potatoes, no way to buy one, even at the price of gold.

We leave empty-handed, and we say that these people, far from unaware of where to buy potatoes, refused to say. Perhaps, were afraid. About ten kilometers after have begun the descent of the plateau, we passed a broken-down truck that we had already seen one way. Chock full of bags of potatoes to 60 pounds. We ask drivers to sell us one. No problem, it makes them a little spending money. Half-price markets of Tbilisi. We ask them where they are generated. "A Tsalka, by Jove, where else?"

One explanation seems possible. The market works like this: wholesalers buy potatoes at low prices to farmers or to smaller vendors Tsalka for markets in Tbilisi, and prohibit the sale of indigenous particular. In short, a capitalist version kolkhoz system that existed here during the Soviet era.

descended into the valley, I talk about this story. And hear about someone who, Mingrelia, tried a few years ago to mount a sale of herbs that grew in particular. And that the company could not be done because the local mafia prohibited from selling to anyone but her. A

Tsalka, the collapse of the Soviet Union has changed a lot of data in demographics, as regards the state of infrastructure. But the economics of ancient times, he seems to have perseverance. Are they the same, the former directors of collective farms, which have always control over the region?

How Long Do Cigars Last

Sokhoumi, so far, so near

Atlas of Georgia, led by Marina Sokhadzé, p.9: "On the coast of the Black Sea (Georgian), there are many resorts : Bitchvinta, Gagra Sokhoumi, Ouréki, Kobouléti, Makhindjaouri, Batumi ... "

The first three sites listed are in Abkhazia, de facto republic separate from Georgia since 1993, indeed since the defeat at the Georgian August 2008 war. Nothing in the atlas, not a card or a line, not to suggest that all these places, memories of the best holidays of the years 1970 or 80, are nearly 20 years inaccessible to Georgians.

On the country's main highway from Tbilisi to go west, the great leadership shown on all panels is Sokhoumi. Nothing suggests that in reality we can not get there by car from this side of the Caucasus.

In Georgia, everything is presented as if was still in Abkhazia Georgia, ostensibly as if they wanted to ward off the brutal truth. Yet if de jure, the world refuses to endorse military reality, with the exception of Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru (awarded without hiding a large sum of money to recognize the territories separatists in Georgia), de facto, everybody knows somewhere that Tbilisi has a very small chance of power in the near future send his bathers on the beaches Abkhaz. Nobody is fooled, but nobody can afford to own it without a traitor to the nation.

Car to Tbilisi, we still dream of reclaiming the breakaway Abkhazian capital, whether one is native or not. The how is not important. This BMW on behalf of Sokoumi with the cross of Bolnisi, Georgia cross national, has more than a little sister parked in the Georgian capital and that as she launches an appeal to the reconquest of lost territory.

Burn Marks On An Iron

Plekhanov, the future capital of fashion in the Caucasus?

Plekhanov, the Left Bank neighborhood of Tbilisi to the charming architecture of the nineteenth, had by far the means to become a new "Fashion Hype.

For twin fifties at least, because for some time, we see them scroll by two flying to shimmering winter clothes on the sidewalk of the Avenue Aghmachénébéli in full renovation, and the example might spread throughout Tbilisi, beyond Georgia, and why not across the Caucasus, Asia Minor and, one might dream of one day leaving his indelible mark on world ?

Formula To Calculate Interest On Rd

SNOW ....

Friday morning, a little girl in my class brought me a letter while his loose or sorry (women sometimes have ideas not shared by Mr.) dad hides in the hallway. Here's an excerpt: "Dear Madam, (there, now, I understand that it will not be funny.) R is for lunch and dinner soaked the entire length of his trousers, up her tights. It seems that 'she plays slide on the carpet at the foot of toboggan.Je think it would be preferable to prohibit this kind of game when it's cold.
I am well aware that it is difficult to forbid children to play and that R does not hesitate to go gambling where it should not. (Yes, I noticed!)
Wherever possible, I would appreciate to ensure that the sliding surfaces soaked in full winter are prohibited. (yes, hence c 'and there is winter rain and snow, nothing seems more natural there ...) ...... I thank you and wish you a good day. "(C' is safe, it starts well).

The night I tried to explain to Mom that when it snows, it is preferable to adapt the conduct of its children to the weather.
Yes ... m has she répondu.Mais still at the foot of the slide is more wet. I was him said firmly, but I'm nice again, 'em swear that all the court is wet anyway because the mayor is not his job and the snow wets. Ba and not after whiter than white, we are more wet than wet ...
Like, I'm still a bit sweet, I told him I'm ready to spend time to put the clothes and boots that children need so they can enjoy its magical moments in the snow. And ba
not. She left angry, saying "it is discussed, it is discussed ...." And

ba me, a little sweet mistress, I would say that prohibit leaving their engines running to school, to give some shit to eat children, to cram thirty in the classes in the hustle and bustle, that he would take care of our kids, we should protect them from the constant onslaught of all forms. And I also say it would prohibit maîcresses annoy and discourage them a little more each day ... And when it snows one week a year, allowed to wade and feel the winter.

Fresco Stalin at 105 Aghmachénébéli in 2008 (Birgit Kuch)

After surviving the Stalinization, to perestroika and the Civil War, the Little Father of the People, the most famous Georgian, has succumbed to redevelopment undertaken by the Tbilisi government of Mikheil Saakashvili. Under the program launched by the mayor of the capital Guivi Ougoulava (the president's party), entitled "The new life of old Tbilisi, Aghmachénébéli Avenue (formerly Plekhanov) is renovated from top to bottom. This area of Russian neo-classical architecture of the nineteenth century, the magnificent facades but in poor condition, will experience the largest cleanup in its history. The buildings will be transformed, modernized, some will win a stage.

The current regime, pro-Western and modernist, does little admiration for the Stalinist period and must be rather happy to get rid of its traces cumbersome. In the capital at least, because in Gori, birthplace of the dictator, it will be another case of removing the statues of Joseph Dzhugashvili without hitting people in love with her prodigal son ...

Radisson SAS Iveria (N. Landru)

In the Georgian capital, The prestigeous Iveria Hotel, Which Was The city's best one in the Soviet Times With Appealing views we Tbilisi and surrounding mountains, Became In The 1990's the symbol of independent Georgia's tragedy. It Was Built At the End of the 1970's and got the name of an ancient eastern Georgian kingdom, Iveria. Sometimes translated "Iberia", the officials prefered "Iveria", because in case the "I" would fall down, one could read "Beria", the name of stalinist purges' executor in Georgia in the 1930's! IDPs from Abkhazia were relocated here after 1993, at the very heart of the capital. Thus, the hotel embodied the country's sorrows.

In 2005, the dull concrete tower was purchased by investors, and its provisory inhabitants got money to move out. After years of looking like a skeleton, the Iveria was finally rebuilt by the Kazakh-owned Silk Road Group and became in 2009 the brand new Radisson Blu "Iveria" 5 stars hotel.

And for the richer ones, sauna and swimming pool are all surrounded by a bay window, so that one can swim or sweat (naked!) in front of an aerial panorama, facing the Caucasus Kazkbek Range - and without being seen...
